Civil Rank Badge (Buzi)

清代文官补子

Rank badges were applied to the front and back of an official’s surcoat: birds for civil office, the species fixed to the grade. The composition combines the principal creature with cloud bands, a wave-and-mountain base and a sun disc — the bird turning its head towards the sun. The front badge is split in two by the coat’s opening; the back badge is a single square.
