Jifu Robe with Dragons and Clouds on a Blue Ground

清代蓝地云龙纹吉服袍

On a blue ground the dragons are worked in couched gold thread, the scales laid in fans that advance inward from the widest edge, each scale overlapping the turn of the one before so that its rim stands slightly proud. In couched work the metal thread is never passed through the ground but secured with fine silk stitches, leaving the gold unbroken on the surface.
