Woman’s Jifu Surcoat with Floral Roundels on a Red Ground

清代红地团花纹女吉服褂

On a red ground, floral medallions are set at chest, back and shoulders, each combining vase, flowers and fluttering ribbons into an auspicious composition. Collar, closure and cuffs are banded in dark blue floral silk, and the hem carries the wave-and-mountain border above vertical water. Women’s jifu surcoats favour flowers and assorted treasures in the medallions, in contrast to the dragons of men’s dress.
