Weaving Bureau Selvedge Inscriptions

清代织造款识

The selvedge of a robe length often carries a woven inscription naming the weaving bureau and the official who supervised production — “Jiangnan Weaving Bureau, servitor Minglun”, “Suzhou Weaving Bureau, servitor …”. Such marks tie a textile to a specific establishment and are among the most direct evidence available for place and date. They are the first thing that should be recorded when a garment is examined.
